We would like to see it go to good owners. Check it out at kingstonfarm.net.

Originally built in 1946 as a berry-canning kitchen, Kingston Farm has deep roots in the North Kitsap’s farm culture. Helen Smith for many years made her jams and jellies in the kitchen, dining and living room portion of the house. She stored her fruit and finished product in the root cellar before selling to the Fredrick and Nelson department store in Seattle. In the early 70’s the cannery turned into a home by adding two bedrooms and a bath to the east end. In 1998 the current owners, a photojournalist and film art director, added the west end master suite and great room to mimick a carriage house then wrapped the entire home with fresh cedar siding and metal roofing. The majestic custom doors open outward to the garden patio and gardens. The property’s rich sandy loam provides fertile soil for vegetables and flowers while the 2.5 acre fenced pasture with loafing shed has been home to horses, sheep, goats and chickens. An additional 2.5 acre pasture and buildable lot is available adjacent. Both pastures are surrounded with New Zealand seven wire electric fence. The barn was last home to Kingston Farm and Feed, an organic feed store and the home of a farm to fork bakery cafe and event space. The former darkroom is certified kitchen-ready and with the freshly refurbished root cellar, Kingston Farm is perfect for those with a similar passion to Helen’s or for those who just want to lay back in the outdoor claw foot bathtub and drink in the property’s northwest tranquility. Kingston Farm is truly a special property.

We machine picked some of that area Thursday so most of the fruit is hidden in the middle of the bushes and a bit of a hunt to get but there is plenty. It is a beautiful weekend and the Jersey Jungle is a beautiful setting with views of The Chuckanut Mountains and surrounding farmland. If you’re bucket doesn’t overflowith we have cases of beautiful frozen blueberries available in the store.

We have lots of Bluecrop which are the big fatties that people like for cereal and freezing to eat right out of the bag. Our heirloom varieties start with the Rubel which is the first wild blueberry to be grown commercially, these berries ripen in the mid-to-late season. Rubels are prized for their sweet, robust flavor and their high antioxidant content. Our Stanleys is an heirloom developed from the Rubel in the early 1920s. Many—including Farmer Harley himself—consider Stanleys sweet full flavor to be the most delicious blueberry variety. Our fourth variety is the Jersey was also developed from the Rubel. People have long enjoyed picking under the protective canopy of the large Jersey branches. That section of the farm has been dubbed “the jungle.” The berries themselves are a beautiful dark blue color, medium sized and very sweet. If you would like a tour of the heirlooms just ask. We’ll be happy to lead you to them even if you don’t want to you-pick. Our Grazing Pass (think backstage pass) at $7 gives you access to an all-you-can-eat experience of every variety and beautiful day on the farm. The size difference between the newer Bluecrop and the Heirloom Rubel can be seen in the photo of our son in the slideshow covering his eyes with one of each.
